1825 LIVERPOOL Streets ~ No.19

Hello friends, I'm back! It seems ages since my last permabulation round the streets on 27th November. I have only ventured out once since then for a short look around the waterfront on 4th January. My memories of cosy nights in front of the yule-log fire, watching the flickering flames dancing on the walls of our front room, are slowly dimming, as the coming of a new year brings the realisation that I have to be on my travels again. The alternating fogs and gales in November and December have given way to a spell of cold frosty weather with a penetrating north wind which whips the flurries snow into small drifts. Few people were out of doors this morning, but I wrapped up against the elements and started my walk at the corner of Colquitt Street.

At this point I had to climb over piles of builders' materials to continue my walk up the street. There seem to be about a dozen new houses under construction ~ brought to a stand still by the icy conditions. However, it has not prevented the labourers from turning out. About a dozen dishevelled individuals are huddled around a large brazier by a watchman's hut. They invited me to join them for a jug of ale and a hunk of bread. However, I declined and carried on to the end of the street.

Phew! I am well and truly exhausted after today's walk, so much so that I am getting a cab back home without calling for my customary victuals at my favourite ale-house. Next time I am with you, it will be on the west side of Salthouse Dock ~ CORNHILL.
