I really needed a break from the traumas of the repairs to my house, not only those occasioned by the brewery dray incident, but also more mundane problems caused by the weather. During the recent storms we lost many shingles from off our roof, and one night were rudely awakened by the sound of dripping water. On extricating ourselves from under the counterpane, we were horrified to see a gaping hole in the ceiling, and even more worrying, we could see the clouds through it scudding across the black sky! All this has taken my mind of my ramblings somewhat. Today, however, I have been down to the docks to find out who looks after all the inland carrying by land and water. Being a nice day, I took a small knapsack containing my food for the day ~ bread, cheese and some slices of gammon, together with a large flask of brown ale. I settle down outside the doors of the Duke of Bridgewater's Offeice at No. 2 north side of Duke's Dock Quay and the agent, JOHN OWEN, gave me all the details which I now pass on to you.
